University of Konstanz signs lease for Schloss Seeburg

6. June 2008

Representatives from the University of Konstanz and Kreuzlingen in the canton of Thurgau (Switzerland) today signed a leasing agreement that will secure a new home for the Institute for Advanced Study.

The institute is an integral element of the Center of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration” that was created in the course of the university’s Excellence Initiative. The leasing agreement will run from October 2008 through to the end of September 2011 and includes an option to extend the agreement through to 2014 or 2017.

The university’s new rooms cover approximately 480 m². The institute will be housed on the second and the top storey of the palace on the banks of Lake Constance. The building’s current occupants, the Pädagogischen Hochschule Thurgau (PHTG), will continue to use the rooms until late September. “We are delighted that we were able to secure the lease on a property in this fantastic location. We look forward to bringing a small slice of our university to our neighbors in Thurgau. We would like to use this opportunity to strengthen our close ties with the Canton of Thurgau and to build new bridges between the neighboring cities of Konstanz and Kreuzlingen”, explained the Rector of the University of Konstanz, Prof. Gerhart v. Graevenitz. Von Graevenitz attended the ceremony together with Jens Apitz, Director of the University Administration, and the spokesperson for the Center of Excellence Prof. Rudolf Schlögl. The canton of Thurgau was represented at the ceremony by Ernst Graf, Restaurant Schloss Seeburg, the mayor of Kreuzlingen Andreas Netzle and city councillor Dorena Raggenbass.

The Institute for Advanced Study was previously located in the Bischoffsvilla in Konstanz. “Like its redecessor in the Bischoffsvilla the institute in Schloss Seburg will be open to professors and academics from around the world. The first eight particpants in the program are already preparing to move into the new rooms at the palace. The University of Konstanz will, however, continue to be a campus university. The facilities in the Bischofsvilla and Schloss Seeburg are exceptions to this rule”, explained Director Apitz when asked whether the university planned any further projects of this kind.
